🔗 Share this article The Generosity of Strangers: How a Man I Barely Knew Helped Me Secure the Position That Transformed My Existence In the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Because my friend was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had planned a fortnight visit there on the way to London. We reached the postgrad residence, a large multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, sat down, and began chatting with fellow residents. Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I explained that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been conducting research with electron microscopy. He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I should apply for a role with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa. The following day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that night. The Iraqi student approached me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but right away explained to my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was probably wasting her time. Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where everything seems achievable – she said: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London. I worked there for three years. One of the benefits was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a graduate degree in global studies. I never saw that student again and I can't recall his full name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in multiple respects. I would never have had the confidence or self-belief to contact anyone at an prestigious college and seek a position. And, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit. Critically, that job in New York resulted in a position in Switzerland where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative. What is the Most Generous Act a Someone You Didn't Know Has Ever Done for You?
